Ask Alexis: How do you know when the time is right to switch careers?
When I get ask this question, I am on the freights because I am not sure how to answer this question, except shed some light on what happen to me when I change careers. When I first decided to start my blog back up, it was hard, because I kind of figure out that I didn't have the time to do my blog, then I decided that I can always do my blog at home when I come home from my other job, it will be a hard process, but I wanted to do it, so I kind of figure it would be the best options. So I started to do my pros and cons on the blog and then I put everything in a bowl and shake them up and then pull out one that could be the benefit of doing the blog, So I did. One quote that I wrote down, was you can always find time. So I did, and here I am. But I never really change my career, unless you can say that I switch from fashion designer to fashion journalism. I guess, I did.
Dear Alexis
I am writing to introduce myself, my name is undecided on my career. Right now I am working as a retailer and I would like to change my career to working in PR. I know that is far fetch and I am willing to work at it. I was wondering how do you know when the time is right to switch careers?
-undecided
It never to late to switch careers, especially when you know what career you want and also if you know what you want to do. The saying that I follow, is always know what you want and don't switch all the time, if you have a goal you should really stick to it, because that is your working goal, if you want to get into PR, then you should study all the aspect that PR has to offer, and you should know what type of PR you want to get into, because you have fashion, music, beauty, movies, models, and also you books. So you should be able to know what type of PR you want to get into. There is a tip that I can give you, figure out what do you like best, like fashion, music and entertainment. Write everything down and figure out. Best there one thing that I am going to tell you, since you are in retail, this job can help you, especially with the customers parts, because as a PR, you gain clients and you have to talk to a lot of people that you are trying to represent or already representing. So do your research and read everything you can know about PR. To me, PR seem like a fun job to get into and a really fun job to change to. Always stay focus and also be one step ahead of the game.
If you applying for colleges, then figure out what type of PR you want to get into first, because you are going to need it, because that what a counselor is going to ask you once you apply and also once you talk to one. You need to know what you want do in PR and whether you want to do PR in fashion, music, books, models, movies and beauty, they made sound like the same, but in reality they are not, because they would want to put you into the right classes and help you achieve your goal. Just focus on your career and try to get internships. If you want to you can always find internships that has fashion, music, movies, models, books, and beauty, they are all type of agencies that deal with that sort of thing and you can figure out after that. once you get a internship and see if you like it or not. If you can't find any look it up online. Online is a pretty big world.
If you are not applying to colleges, you can still get work experience, because you still can get internships and also the internet is a pretty big world that is at your feet. Also you can read books at your local library or go to a college and ask the librarian if you can read books on PR and see if you can print some stuff out. It really not that hard, if you put your heart and soul into something that you really want.
So Career are you thinking about switching to? Please leave in the comments below.
